At this point in my trip, I am only one hour away from my destination! I had driven 11 hours to get to this here, and was getting excited to see everyone. As I drove by, I waved at Teresa, who I found is related through marriage to me, all through my blog - small world!!
So, this is Mile 0 on the Alaska Highway that measures 1422 miles to Delta Junction. Fort St. John is Mile 49 and that was my stop. You have to drive down this highway to get to Alaska, no way around it! I used to work at Wendy's in FSJ right on the highway, and we saw unbelievable amount of RV traffic in the summer.
This is a view of the Taylor Hills, about 20 mins away from where I used to live. These are the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, and about 2 hours south of here, at Powder King, you will find some of the best skiing anywhere in the world, so I'm told. I can't say that I enjoyed it there, but I am sooooo not a skier, and that is a whole 'nother story!
This hill is so step and curvy that there are chain stops for semis on each side of the valley. In winter, it is MANDATORY for them to pull over and put chains on their tires, so they can go down and up safely. You will also drive through here on your way north.
I have another story for you , but I will save that for another post. I would like to know though, how many of you have been through Dawson Creek, on your way "North to Alaska, going north, the rush is on." You may not have seen that sign, it is newer, but I'm pretty sure there was another in it's place. If you have any pictures, email them to me, and I will share them here, so we can all see ourselves at the same spot during different times.
